Evidence of filming production

  Evidence of filming production

In our first week of filming when we used our DSLR camera to film Hallucination, we set up the camera and the tripod to the correct height and distance to be able to get the footage that we needed. Although we used a camera and tripod to film, we also had to create good lighting scenes and in order to do this we used 3-point lighting and a portable light that was given to us, even with the light we used our mobile phone torches to help us.

Here we used the portable light given to us which we turned on swell as using natural lighting.

After filming all of our scenes within a week we had to put it in final cut Pro however when we listened back to it some of the audio wasn't loud enough and you couldn't hear the actors, so we used a microphone to make voice overs of the parts that weren't as clear.

We had to film the picnic scene many times because of the lighting outside we needed it to look clear and be focused, we tried to create an effect of Simona being able to sit down with her dead friends and talk about what they will do in the future. We used a tripod to create a still recording of the picnic scene. The food they are eating at the picnic just represents how they are as friends as they are all different but together they are really good and I just feel like showing the audience that they were close means a lot and that Selma losing her friends impacted her a lot and that's why she can't get over the fact that they died a year ago.

Hallucinations short film

Choice of camera and lighting equipment

 3 point lighting

we have chosen to use three-point lighting because we were able to get good lighting, and this creates a more interesting and more dynamic image where we can have the subject be shown with more dimension ad, we have more control over the shadows we want to create if we need major or minor ones. 3-point lighting is also used to fill in the light instead of just creating shadows, we made the light to be dimmer than the key light and we positioned it at an angle where it gives Selma some depth in some scenes. The reason we chose 3-point lighting is that we wanted to give the shadows a bit more depth and make them sharper.

Choice of camera equipment

For our film Hallucination, we have chosen the Canon DSLR 250D (with a 18-55 mm lens) as our camera. The reason we have chosen this camera is because this is the camera that we have been advised to use for this task. We have chosen to use a tripod as we will need the camera to capture clips that are not shaky and that do not move.

Choice of camera settings

For our short film, we used a range of camera settings to get the shots that we needed to make the atmosphere look as if the film is in a suspenseful mood. So, we have increased the aperture and what this does is it allows less light to enter the camera which we needed as we were filming outside, and we had a lot of light already coming in. This setting was also better for us as we wanted everything to be in focus as we were filming in a group and a landscape.

Changing the shutter speed has also helped us control the amount of light that the camera takes in as this acted like a curtain for us infant of the camera sensor and will remain closed until we start recording.

For the ISO on our short film, we made sure that in certain scenes we decreased it to 200 as we wanted less sensitivity to the light especially in our picnic scene, we turned the iso down as we already had enough natural light coming in, we didn't want to make it go worse. In some scenes, we kept the ISO at 3200 as we needed a lot of light to get the camera as we were indoors, and it was a bit too dark.

Risk assessment

Evidence evaluation of suitability of coverage

At the beginning of our short film, we used a flashback to get the audience engaged. The flashback creates an enigma code and gets the audience hooked. The lack of sound and the fast-paced cuts make it clear to the audience that it is a flashback. At the end of the flashback, we get footage of an empty house, this could suggest to the audience that something is not right as it feels eerie.

After that, we get straight into the action where we see the main characters, here they are just talking and drawing. This scene makes the audience feel normal, the use of soft background music makes the scene relaxing. The establishing shot of the park shows that there is no one there except them. This might feel normal to the audience at first but after watching the short film it makes sense that they are alone, as this is all in Selma's mind. That means she chooses who to think of.

The lack of music in the beginning shots of the location and the footage of the food makes the scene a bit awkward. But as soon as they start speaking it's all fine. This suggests that Selima is trying her best to make this situation a reality. Soft-toned upbeat music is used, and it looks like they're having a picnic and a good time.

However, she can't 100%, and the audience can see right through that as well. When the characters are speaking the scene is also a bit unstable in their delivery at times or has abrupt cuts, showing the audience that they might be present with her and that it's all a dream.

Selimas hazy hallucination

In post-production, we have also added a visual effect overlay on Final cut pro. This helps us in creating Selima's dream-like world. However, we have only used this for the last scene before Selima wakes up which shows that something is about to happen since the scene is so hazy, creating mystery.

Visual effects and colour grading

Selima wakes up

The use of lighting and colour also helps in strengthening what's going on in Selimas's 'dream'. In the above picture, we have manipulated some scenes into having more warmer or muted tones and bright colored or greyer coloured. This is so that the audience can see how Selima's mind changes. At first in the flashback, we cannot make out the lighting as much but after that, we see Selima with her friends enjoying herself, and the scene slowly becomes warmer in tone. Until she is made aware of the situation where her mum tells her that her friends have died in an accident. The switch in colours and tones changes the mood of the aesthetic and makes the audience feel more emotional on a deeper level.

(The angle used here is a bit off to again show that this is not 100% reality)
